AI SEO. Ask what it says about you.
It will answer, and whatever it says was put together out of what is publicly written about you, by you and by other people. If that says very little, the answer uses somebody else's business instead.

In one year, six percent became forty-five.
That is the share of US adults who used an AI tool to get a local business recommendation in the past year. It is now the third most-used way people look for a local business, ahead of Yelp and TripAdvisor. Nothing about your website changed. What changed is where the question gets asked, and whether the answer has your name in it.

It is not a ranking. It is a summary.
A search engine hands you a list and lets you choose. An assistant reads the same public material and hands back one answer, usually two or three names with a sentence about each. Nothing is bought, nothing is submitted, and there is no position to be in.
So the question is not how to rank in it. It is whether what has been written about you, by you and by other people, is clear enough and consistent enough to be the thing it quotes. That is a smaller and far more ordinary job than it sounds, and most local businesses have simply never been asked to do it.

Ask it again, and the answer moves.
This is what an assistant does with a question in your trade. It reads what is publicly written, picks two or three businesses, and writes a sentence about each. Nobody paid to be in it and nobody submitted anything. Press the button and watch it pick again.
Who should I call for a burst pipe in Rockford tonight?
1 of 1of the answers you have seen named you
Same question, asked four times. That is not a fault in the assistant and it is not something a tool can be bought to fix. It is why there is no position to guarantee here, and why the only honest measurement is a run of questions read for its pattern rather than one good answer screenshotted.
We asked it about ourselves.
Five questions a Rockford business owner might type, put to ChatGPT in fresh chats in September 2026. Same assistant, same afternoon. Change the wording and the answer changes with it.

What nobody can promise you.
This is the newest thing in the industry, which makes it the easiest thing to oversell. Three plain limits, and we would rather you heard them from us first.
No index, no rank, no console, nothing to submit and nothing to buy. Anyone selling you a guaranteed place in an AI answer is selling something that does not exist. What can be promised is the work on the record, and a straight before and after.
Two people asking the same question in the same town can get different answers, and the same question can answer differently a week later. So we read a run of questions and look for the pattern, rather than screenshotting one good answer and calling it a result.
Almost everything that helps here helps ordinary search too: a clear site, a listing that is right, reviews that keep arriving, pages that answer questions. We would rather fold it into the work than sell you an AI package that is the same work with a new name on the invoice.
Four ordinary things, done properly.
None of this is a trick and none of it is new. It is the same public record that decides your search results, held to a higher standard, because an answer quotes one business where a results page lists ten.
Ask the questions your customers ask
We collect what people in your trade actually type, in your towns, and run it in the assistants they use. There is no ranking report to read instead, so the questions are the instrument.
Make the record agree with itself
Your name, address, hours, services and service area, the same everywhere they appear. An assistant reading three versions of your hours quotes the one it trusts, and that is usually somebody else's.
Answer the question on the page
Pages that answer the thing that was asked, in the first paragraph, in plain sentences a person can read and a machine can lift. Ordinary good writing doing double duty, not a new format.
Run it again afterwards
The same questions, the same towns, after the work. A before and after is the only honest measurement here, so it is the one we put in the report rather than a number nobody can check.
Nobody is going to ask an assistant for your business by name. They are going to ask for what you do, and somewhere in that answer is a name. The work is making it yours.
The answer is an introduction, not a decision.
Almost nobody reads an answer and calls the first name in it. Eighty-eight percent of the people who use AI this way check the sources or verify what they were told, and ninety-seven percent cross-check against real reviews. So an assistant hands somebody your name, and then they go and look you up the ordinary way.

01
The answer names you
Two or three businesses, a sentence about each, put together out of what is publicly written about you.
-
02
They go and check
Your name typed into a search, your listing, your reviews. Nine in ten open another tab, and this is the one that decides it.
-
03
What they find either holds or it does not
Hours that are right, a listing somebody answers, reviews from this year, and a page that says plainly what they were just told you do.
Which is why the AI work and the ordinary work are one job. Everything that gets you named in an answer is the same material that has to survive being checked a minute later: the listing, the reviews, and the pages that answer the question. We would rather fold it into the work than sell it to you twice.

What owners actually ask about this.
The six that come up on nearly every first call, answered the way we would answer them on the phone.
There is nothing to submit and nothing to buy. An assistant writes its answer out of what is already published about you: your listing, your reviews, your own pages, and whatever other sites say. So the work is making that material clear, consistent and easy to quote, and then asking the questions again to see whether it moved. Anybody offering to place you in an AI answer is selling something that does not exist.
Often, yes, and it is usually the most quotable thing about a small business, because it is structured: hours, services, service area, categories, reviews. That is why the listing work and this work are the same work. If your hours are wrong in three places, the assistant picks one, and it may not be the one you would choose.
Both, and it is worth being careful. The behavior is real and it is moving fast. The industry built to sell it is three years old at most, and a lot of it is guaranteed placements in something that has no placements. What we do here is ordinary and checkable: run the questions, fix the record, write the pages, run the questions again. If somebody quotes you a rank or a guaranteed spot, ask them where the ranking is published.
The record work lands first, because hours, categories, service area and consistency are fixed rather than earned, and an assistant reading a clean record quotes it sooner. Whether that shows up in the answers is slower and less predictable than search, because the answers move on their own. We run the questions before we start so there is a real starting point, and we would rather show you a before and after than promise you a date.
The same questions, in the same towns, run before and after, and a page in your monthly report that shows the share of the answers we track that named you. That is a specific number with a specific meaning: out of the answers we collected for your questions, how many had your name in them. It is not reach, it is not impressions, and it is not the number of times your site was cited. The free audit runs the first set for you before you have paid anything.
No, and we would rather say so than invent a line item. Almost everything that helps here helps ordinary search too, and it is the same team doing it. If somebody is charging you separately for an AI package, ask which of the work in it is not already in your SEO.
Nobody buys a plan they haven't seen.
The free audit is a look at what you already have and what it is costing you, sent over with nothing to sit through. The plan is a conversation about where the business is and where you want it to get to, and it ends with a path written down rather than a quote. Or you call, and somebody who works on accounts picks up.
